Dr. Shannon MacDonald

MD, FRCPC, Psychiatrist

Dr. Shannon Macdonald (she/her) originally hails from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She completed all her post-secondary education at Dalhousie University, earning a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 1998, a Doctorate of Medicine in 2002, and completing her specialty in Psychiatry in 2007.

Dr. Macdonald began her career working with Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia Health. As an Associate Professor in Psychiatry, she held numerous teaching roles within the medical school and residency program. Clinically, she has worked in a range of settings, including consultation-liaison psychiatry, the Reproductive Mental Health Program at the IWK, shared care programs supporting family physicians, and a public community mental health clinic—where she remained until 2025.

She is committed to supporting all patients across the spectrum of sexual and gender diversity and has training in the WPATH Standards of Care. Dr. Macdonald also has a particular interest in women’s mental health, recognizing how reproductive stages can significantly impact overall well-being.

In addition, she has extensive experience working with Veterans and RCMP members and has developed a deep passion for supporting this population.

At True North Psychological Services, Dr. Macdonald aims to provide individualized, trauma-informed, and holistic care, guided by each patient’s personal values and goals. Treatment may include innovative medications, psychotherapeutic approaches, or other evidence-based interventions, all selected in collaboration with the patient.
